Kurt Fearnley |
![]() The first thing to say about Kurt Fearnley is that he is a true sporting superstar. That he happens to have been confined to a wheelchair since birth is now almost a footnote to an extraordinary, life-long tale of achievement. In 2011, his already extensive trophy cabinet continued to expand, most notably with his retention of the marathon at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Christchurch. A six-time world champion with marathon victories on five continents, Fearnley currently boasts an astonishing career 31 marathon victories. This year he also posted his fourth win in five years in the Chicago Marathon (he missed in 2010 to win gold in the Commonwealth Games) and won his seventh Oz Day 10km wheelchair race in Sydney. In November 2010, Fearnley came third in the world famous New York marathon. A tremendous effort, even if his own impossibly high standards meant he was disappointed - after all, he had won the previous four editions. A heartbreaking second in the Boston Marathon on an unsuitable course reinforced his adaptability. Currently deep in preparations for the 2012 London Paralympics, Fearnley is now aiming to do something no athlete has won before by winning the wheelchair marathon for the third straight time. |
